Having WiFi issues with Dell Venue Pro 8? Uninstall Microsoft Patch KB2887595 and KB2903939

UPDATE (10-Dec-2013): Updated to include fix for WiFi problems caused by latest Patch Tuesday installs.

My WiFi stopped working on my Dell Venue Pro 8. Uninstalling Microsoft Updates KB2887595 and KB2903939 fixed the problem.

TIP: After uninstalling these updates, you can go back to Windows Update via the method below, scan for updates, then right-click the updates and select Hide this Update so Windows doesn’t repeatedly try to reinstall it.

To do this:

1. On the Start menu, swipe down to All Applications

2. Scroll all the way right and tap Control Panel

3. When Control Panel appears on the desktop, search for Windows Update by typing in the search box, and tap it

4. On the left pane there will be an option for View Installed Updates. Tap it.

5. Find Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2887595) and tap it, then tap Uninstall. If you also have update KB2903939, don’t restart yet. Otherwise, skip to step 7.

6. Find Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2903939) and tap it, then tap Uninstall.

7. Restart.

8. Your WiFi should be working again.

    Just a tiny typo in your instructions. Above you say” Uninstalling Microsoft Updates KB2887595 and KB2903939 fixed the problem.”

    But in your step by step instructions you say:

    6. Find Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2907595) and tap it, then tap Uninstall.

    — rather than KB2903939

    in my case,KB2903939 was killing my wifi, i found out something new. i followed your steps and then i installed KB2894029 ; this update appeared in my updates ( for some reason its not yet in microsoft.com), after this update, i installed KB2887595 and finally KB2903939 again with no problems at all, and now everything is working fine, sometimes it didnt even turned on again, and now its fine. i saw you posted in dell , you should try this.

    maybe KB2894029 its the update needed to get this fixed, but since everybody has no wifi, it’s imposible to update.

    Based on Fernando’s response, which had to do with installing update KB2894029, which is related Microsoft says is related to Windows Server 2012 R2, I installed “My Server 2012 R2” on the tablet from the Windows store. I then reinstalled the offending updates and they did not kill the WIFI!!!

    I bought this Dell Venue 8 Pro on Monday, got the update Tuesday evening and saw the wifi was broken (the adapter could not be enabled even though the device in Device Manager was enabled and “working properly” as it said).

    Removing these two updates and rebooting fixed the problem. Considering there were 22 updates, this saved me a lot of troubleshooting time narrowing it down. Thanks a ton!

  8. KB2894029 was replaced by KB2883200 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2883200 which was already applied to my machine so I don’t think that has anything to do with the fix.

    • I changed my mind. There are definitely some sequencing oddities here especially if you don’t force a rescan between uninstalling updates and re-installing updates. For example after uninstalling just KB2887595 it worked again then installing everything remaining NOT starting with “update for Windows 8.1…” and rebooting made KB2883200 appear in list, i installed and wireless still worked. I then installed all updates EXCEPT for KB2887595 this broke wireless again, so I uninstalled KB2903939 (which I hadn’t need to uninstall the first time to get it working). So I uninstalled JUST KB2903939 which made KB288320 appear again despite it having been installed. So then I just installed KB288320 and rebooted – all ok. Then I installed KB2887595 and wifi stayed working. Then I installed KB2903939 and wifi still worked. So Fernandos method does work, though you may need to install KB2883200 first.

        I’m hearing about My Server 2012 R2 helping, but I don’t see how a Windows Store app, which generally isn’t allowed to interface with the OS on a deep level, would make a difference. So, caveat emptor. Who’s had that work for them?

        After I got back working (removed the two listed updated on this article and rebooted), I went to Dell’s driver site and updated my BIOS (several updates behind) and chipsets. Then I installed the Windows Updates and I’m now fully updated and still working fine.

    This was a sequencing issue with the updates being applied in random order on some Dell Venue Pro machines. If you hadn’t previously taken KB2883200 and you ended up getting either KB2887595 OR KB 2903939, WIFI would be broken. Microsoft has since added logic to Microsoft Update to force the two offending QFEs to pull last, so this problem should be fixed as of last night. if you had the problem, roll back the offending (or all) updates, restart and then apply all updates again, rebooting as required. This should pull all updates and not break WIFI on Venue 8 Pro or Venue 11 Pro. Thanks!

    I opened wifi property and enabled all 4 checkboxes, especially the one atheros connection property(sorry, mine is in japanese and I dont know how is in english) seems the jackpot, since then no more limited connection issue nor wifi looks connected but no internet, etc problem all gone.

    Seems the rooping between 2.4gb and 5gb band checking was not stable or so. Will see how long is this VERY HAPPY SITUATION continues.

    Just bought one and when i started it up i connected to wifi and created a microsoft acct but then i got to the main home page/desktop, and i turned off wifi cuz i was done using it , but then when i go to turn wifi on , it acts like its turning the wifi on but then it just turns off by itself and doesnt stay on… WHAT IS THIS PROBLEM????????????????????????????????????

    We recently acquired 2 Dell Venue Pro 8 tablets as an affordable and convenient platform to begin testing our POS application on Windows 8. If we changed the screen resolution down to 800×600 our app would fill the screen and it was very nice. We just found we can no longer change the screen resolution below 1024×768. 1 hour on the phone with Dell support and their position was that it never did allow 800×600 (not encouraging). Another hour later and I was told it must be a Windows update, and…..live with it. On my own today, I determined the offending update was KB2887595 as with your WiFi issue (which I never experienced). I returned to a previous restore point, then tried installing all updates, leaving this one unchecked, but it was installed regardless. Any insight you could provide would be welcome. I have no idea how to ensure that other Windows updates do not also include the offending “fix” in KB2887595. About to return to the old restore point and try them one by one. Thank-you.

      I should have mentioned….. after all the updates re-installed and the issue returned, I did uninstall just KB2887595 but doing so did not restore the ability to change the resolution below 1024×1068. Hence my suspicion the same “fix” may also exist in a subsequent update.

    my wi-fi stops working every-time after sleep.

    Thank Auri, I don’t know how I would have fixed this without your help. Uninstalling the WIN8 updates and reinstalling in the correct order seem to have fixed my wireless dropping problem on my DELL V-Pro 11. THANKS AGAIN!

I’ve uninstalled those two updates, and voila! Everything’s hunky dory! So far, anyway. LOL Thanks again!

    I fixed the sluggish wifi on my Dell VP8 finally by uninstalling the dell wireless adapter in device manager (dell wireless 1538 agn adapter). I had tried disabling and enabling the adapter as suggested in one of the posts, to no avail. So I threw caution to the wind after hours of frustration and uninstalled the wireless adapter. Then upon restarting the tablet, it received an automatic, seamless reinstalling of the wireless adapter. After the restart I instantly had full wifi speed, as measured on speedtest.net. None of the above steps of removing and reinstalling updates in the right sequence solved my wifi issue, although they may have contributed to this final step as the ultimate solution. Prior to this final fix and after having gone through all the previous steps with the updates, i would get very inconsistent results, sometimes even under 1mb speed when at one end of my one story house, and full speed only when i have the tablet right next to the router. Now I consistently get full speed (about 20-22 mb download and 2 mb upload) throughout the house.

      update: wifi still dropping intermittently, and noticeably often occurs at beginning of video streaming. My solution is to combine the network adapter disable/enable procedure with “scan for hardware changes” (right click on Network Adapters node). That is, select “scan..,”, then disable/enable network adapter. This works 80% of the time without having to resort to restarting device when the network adapter becomes unresponsive even after enabling.

        Check whether your router needs a firmware update… I’ve seen similar things happen when a router has buggy firmware. It ends up not being the device.

    OR THIS… Goto your device manager find your networking drop it down to reveal the wifi b,g,n device. Right click it. Disable the device wait 30 seconds then enable the device. This worked for me as I did not haave the above downloads. Then go ahead if everything is working, save a restore point! This works especially if your networking just stopped out of nowhere aand the wifi switch just wont stay on. Good luck with your pronlem!

      Does it work on any other networks? If it does, maybe it’s your access point… Might need a firmware update on your access point / router.
